TUESDAY’S TIP: YOU REALLY DO CHOOSE THE FAMILY YOU MARRY!!!!

I really love this topic as it’s a great conversation piece to discuss with family and friends. We’ve all heard the phrase, “You’re not in control of choosing the family you marry into”, but that’s far from the truth.

During the courting process, we are introduced to many of the family members. You meet the crazy uncle, the eclectic aunt, the wild sister or brother; but we overlook them and are apprehensive to talk about it because we are so in love. Family relationships are a sensitive subject for most; so we ignore their behaviors, and imagine that we won’t have to deal with ‘the relatives’.

Throughout the marriag many scenarios can arise-the need to borrow money, a need for a place to stay, and individuals possibly having the ear of your spouse. These are all the situations common to ‘the family’, and will have to be managed throughout your marriage.

It can be a juggling act, but the key is really how each mate chooses to handle their individual family relationships to where those things don’t affect the marriage. The bond that you create with your spouse must be stronger than the drama of your extended family.

There’s an old saying, “Blood is thicker than water”. This statement, if taken out of context, can drive a wedge through your relationship, but blood should never be thicker than “Covenant”.

How you navigate in this area will determine success or failure in connecting the families. There must be long, open, and honest communication to ensure everyone is on the same page. So take off the blinders, and be realistic about who you’re getting involved with and their family dynamics. Time will reveal all you need to know to make an informed decision.
